After that, people may begin using other devices for specific interactions.
Earbuds could handle conversations.

Eventually, the smartphone might still exist.
But you may interact with it far less.

You simply expect electricity to be available.

You might not care which travel website the agent used.

You might not care which calendar interface handled the meeting.
You care that the meeting was scheduled.
The brand of the application could become less important than the quality of the service behind it.
That could fundamentally change the software industry.
Developers Will Still Matter
It's easy to hear this and conclude that AI will eliminate software developers.
I don't think it's that simple.
If anything, developers may move higher up the abstraction ladder.
Instead of manually writing every routine component, developers could increasingly describe systems, review AI-generated code, define architecture, test behavior, and manage complex technical decisions.
The valuable skill may shift from:
"Can you write this code?"
to:
"Can you design, evaluate and control a system that writes and operates code?"
That's a much bigger change than simply making coding faster.
The Smartphone Has One Major Advantage
Despite all this excitement, smartphones have something AI wearables still struggle to match:
They are incredibly versatile.
One device gives you a high-resolution display, camera, microphone, speakers, GPS, powerful processors, biometric authentication, internet connectivity, and thousands of applications.
It's difficult to replace all of that with a pair of glasses or earbuds.
That's why I don't expect one magical "next device" to kill the smartphone.
The transition will probably be ecosystem-driven.
Phone + glasses + earbuds + watch + AI agent.
Together, they could become more powerful than any single device.
The Real Revolution Is Not Hardware
This is where the story gets interesting.
We often think technology revolutions are about devices.
PC → laptop → smartphone → wearable.
But the deeper revolution may be about how we interact with computing.
The PC era taught us to operate software.
The smartphone era taught us to tap interfaces.
The AI era could teach us to delegate outcomes.
That's a much bigger shift.
Instead of learning how software works, we tell software what we want.
Instead of navigating menus, we express intent.
Instead of managing dozens of applications, we manage an AI layer that coordinates them.
The computer becomes less like a tool you operate and more like an assistant you direct.
So, Is This Really the End of the Smartphone?
Probably not.
At least not in the way people imagine.
The smartphone may remain with us for many years.

The next generation of computing may work differently.

That's why I don't think we're necessarily witnessing the death of the smartphone.

Every major computing revolution has changed the answer to one question:
Where is the computer?
With desktops, it was on the desk.

With AI agents and wearables, the answer may eventually become:
Everywhere.
And when computing becomes everywhere, the most important technology may be the one you no longer notice.
